Interviewee: Dr. Zhuo-Hao Liu
Interviewer: Stefana-Andrada Dobran
The third edition of the Neurotrauma Treatment Simulation Center (NTSC) was held from June 17-20 in Vienna, Austria. This training course focuses on advancing global neurotrauma care through multidisciplinary collaboration among specialists involved in the pathway through the medical system of patients with neurotrauma. The NTSC offers participants the tools and insights needed to enhance neurotrauma care, from the pre-hospital phase to rehabilitation, ensuring better patient outcomes globally.
In our interview, Dr. Zhuo-Hao Liu from Taiwan shared insights on the significant impact of brain injuries, noting that they rarely represent an isolated event, as patients often face a range of complex challenges that require comprehensive approaches. He emphasized the importance of a multidisciplinary neurotrauma team—composed of neurosurgeons, neurologists, psychologists, and other specialists—to achieve better patient outcomes. Dr. Liu highlighted one of Taiwan’s current limitations: the absence of a dedicated simulation center, which means physicians must gain experience on a case-by-case basis, which presents a challenge, particularly for young physicians who would benefit greatly from simulated training.
Dr. Liu also discussed country-specific strengths in Taiwan’s neurotrauma care, such as widely available facilities (CT, MRIs), and expressed a strong interest in learning best practices for building a well-coordinated neurotrauma team to optimize patient outcomes.
