Interviewee: Professor Johannes Vester, the president of the Academy for Multidisciplinary Neurotraumatology
Interviewer: Alexandra Gherman
The AMN Interview was conducted during the 20th AMN Congress, which took place between 12-13 May 2023 in Krakow, Poland.
The anniversary edition, organized in a hybrid format, hosted over 250 international attendees and focused on multidisciplinary approaches to neurotrauma.
Professor Johannes Vester, who serves as the President of the AMN, shared his insights regarding the Academy and the AMN Congress, emphasizing the significance of in-person communication and the exchange of diverse scientific perspectives within the field of neurotrauma. Professor Vester highlighted the vital role such interactions play in comprehending neurotrauma and developing innovative treatment approaches, in the context of an interdisciplinary approach.
In his message to professionals attending the 20th AMN Congress, Professor Johannes Vester underscored the importance of fostering new horizons in high-level scientific discussions. Prof. Vester encouraged sharing experiences among experts, drawing lessons from the past, and bridging the gap between research and clinical practice while advocating for a feedback loop that integrates both top-down and bottom-up approaches.
The AMN Guidelines were also approached. Professor Vester pointed out that due to the extensive diversity within neurotrauma, many clinicians face challenges in accessing modern guidelines, as there is a notable absence of comprehensive treatment guidelines encompassing the multifaceted nature of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) during the early recovery phase. The AMN guidelines aim to address these knowledge gaps and provide support to specialists involved in TBI neurorehabilitation.
Regarding Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) research, Prof. Johannes Vester discussed it within the framework of the GRACE principles (Good ReseArch for Comparative Effectiveness). He emphasized the importance of a multidimensional approach in TBI research and highlighted the issue of treatment nihilism when it comes to cognitive, behavioral, and depressive disorders in acute care settings.
Lastly, the interview touched upon the future prospects of AMN, both in the short and long term. Professor Vester encouraged young clinicians and researchers to join the AMN and become part of this exciting academic network.
