Interviewee: Dr. Lynne Lourdes Lucena
Interviewer: Stefana-Andrada Dobran
The third edition of the Neurotrauma Treatment Simulation Center (NTSC) was held from June 17-20 in Vienna, Austria. This training course focuses on advancing global neurotrauma care through multidisciplinary collaboration among specialists involved in the pathway through the medical system of patients with neurotrauma. The NTSC offers participants the tools and insights needed to enhance neurotrauma care, from the pre-hospital phase to rehabilitation, ensuring better patient outcomes globally.
Dr. Lynne Lourdes Lucena is the Founding President of the Neurotrauma Society of the Philippines, the Vice-President of the Academy of Philippino Neurosurgeons, and Chair of the Neurotrauma Committee of the Asian Australian Society of Neurological Surgeons. With 32 years of experience, Dr. Lucena strongly advocates multidisciplinary management and holistic care for patients with neurotrauma. Recognizing neurotrauma as a significant public health burden, she believes that strategic action is needed to address the long-term impacts of neurotrauma. Her focus is not only on reducing mortality rates but also on long-term goals, such as decreasing morbidity and improving patient functionality and productivity.
In the Philippines, she notes limitations in pre-hospital neurotrauma care and ICU (Intensive Care Units) care, noting the lack of dedicated neurotrauma ICUs. Challenges also exist in post-hospital care, including cognitive rehabilitation, due to a shortage of specialists. Despite these challenges, her institution benefits from a highly supportive administration eager to establish new programs and partnerships. She sees an effective neurotrauma team as one that comprehensively addresses every stage of the patient’s care journey, from initial response to rehabilitation. With this vision, she hopes to bring the NTSC program and lessons to her country to support the development of multidisciplinary neurotrauma teams that meet all aspects of patient care.
